GOVERNMENT OF CANADA INVESTS IN NSCC MARCONI CAMPUS EXPANSION

SYDNEY (NS) – November 12, 2010 – Thanks to support from the Government of Canada, the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) is expanding its Sydney campus. The announcement was made today at a sod-turning ceremony for construction of a new $7 million wing to be built on the Marconi Campus.

“Our Government is committed to supporting community economic development opportunities by investing in projects that strengthen and benefit local communities,” said said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway.  “The NSCC has an important role to play in building the economy of Cape Breton and our investment of $1million in the expansion of the Marconi Campus will assist the College in meeting the needs of students and employers.”

The new 26,840 square foot, two-storey wing is designed to be 55% more energy efficient than traditional construction. It will be the new home for the automotive service technician, motorcycle and power products, welding and metal fabrication, and heavy duty truck and transport programs. The new wing will open for students in September 2011.

“This new modern, and well equipped wing will provide students with the opportunity to learn the advanced skills needed to work in the trades and technology sectors,” says Don Bureaux, NSCC Acting President. “The energy efficient features will inspire students to work in the emerging environmentally sustainable economy that is developing in our province.”

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
