ESKASONI ARENA RE-OPENS WITH ASSISTANCE FROM CANADA’S ECONOMIC ACTION PLAN

ESKASONI (NS) – November 10, 2010 – With support from Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Dan K. Stevens Memorial Arena in Eskasoni has reopened after undergoing a year-long, major renovation. The official re-opening ceremony was held today.

“Canada’s Economic Action Plan is ensuring that residents of communities like Eskasoni benefit from stimulus funds for improved recreational facilities,” said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway. “Our government’s investment of almost $400,000 in this community facility has helped generate additional local economic activity and support jobs while contributing to the health and quality of life in Eskasoni.”

The Dan K. Stevens Arena was originally opened in the 1970s and has always served as a focal point for Eskasoni and the surrounding area. It is home to the Eskasoni Minor Hockey Association and is also an important entertainment venue.

Renovations to the arena have been extensive and included repairs to the exterior of the building and the roof, as well as to dressing rooms, washrooms, public seating areas and the restaurant. The electrical, security and fire safety systems have also been upgraded and the facility is now wheelchair accessible.

The Government of Canada, through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation has contributed $399,445 toward the project under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program (RInC), a key stimulus initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The RInc program is helping to upgrade and renew recreational facilities in communities across Canada, and to encourage increased participation in physical activity and community building. To date, $2.9 million in RInC investments have been announced for 41 projects throughout Cape Breton Island.

“The Dan K. Stevens Memorial Arena is an important contributor to the social and economic development of this community,” said Derek Johnson, Arena Manager. “The financial support from the Government of Canada has enabled us to provide the people of Eskasoni with a modern facility that will serve this growing community well into the future.”

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
