CLIPPERS AND CREWS RECEIVE OFFICIAL WELCOME

SYDNEY (NS) - June 14, 2010 – More than 200 crew members from the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race were officially welcomed to Cape Breton Island and Canada today by Senator Michael MacDonald and Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) Mayor John Morgan.

“Our government, is pleased to work with the local community to promote Cape Breton Island’s many attributes,” said Senator MacDonald, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway “Cape Breton’s participation in the Clipper Race is an innovative marketing, trade and business promotion opportunity that will have an important economic impact for years to come.”

Between June 11 and 19 the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavillion in Sydney is hosting the ten 68-foot clippers participating in the Clipper 09/10 Round the World Race as they prepare for the final leg of the race across the North Atlantic. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC), working with the Sydney Ports Corporation, has sponsored a clipper branded Cape Breton Island – Nova Scotia’s Masterpiece.  It is the only Canadian entry in this year’s race and Sydney is the only Canadian port of call.

The Clipper Race began in Hull/Humber, UK in September 2009 and will conclude there on July 18, 2010, after completing a 35,000 mile circumnavigation of the globe and stopping in 14 international ports of call.

To celebrate the Clipper Race stopover in Cape Breton, the CBRM has organized a week-long series of events on the waterfront. In addition, on June 17, ECBC is organizing a trade conference in conjunction with the Clipper visit, where delegates will explore opportunities for increased trade in seafood between Cape Breton Island and the UK.

The clippers set sail for Europe on June 19.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA’s programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
